If any of this sounds familiar, you're in the right place.
You feel guilty for being exhausted — because your child needs you to be "on"
Your own emotions get pushed aside because there's always something more urgent
You've cried in the car after an IEP meeting — then walked back in calm
You love your child deeply and grieve the life you imagined — both things are true
Friends and family don't really understand what your days look like
You've lost parts of yourself — your career, your friendships, your sense of who you are outside of caregiving
You research therapies, fight insurance, coordinate care — and no one is coordinating yours
You're waiting for the next crisis, even when things are okay
About this work
Parenting a child with special needs is a different kind of hard
There's no roadmap for this. You navigate systems, fight for services, coordinate between specialists, manage your child's needs and emotions — all while trying to hold your own life together. The emotional toll of this is enormous, and it's rarely talked about.

Caregiver burnout, grief, anxiety, identity loss, relationship strain — these aren't signs you're failing. They're signs you've been running without enough support for too long.

Therapy at Alera Counseling is a space that's just for you. Not your child's next steps. Not the IEP. Not what you should be doing differently. A space to put down what you're carrying and figure out how to keep going in a way that's actually sustainable.
Caregiver Burnout
The depletion that comes from giving everything — and having no clear end point in sight.
Anxiety & Chronic Stress
The hypervigilance that comes with navigating medical complexity, school systems, and uncertainty.
Relationship Strain
When parenting stress affects your marriage, co-parenting dynamic, or relationships with other children.
Grief & Ambiguous Loss
Mourning the life you imagined for your child, and for yourself — without a clear permission to grieve.
Guilt & Self-Criticism
"Am I doing enough?" The relentless self-scrutiny that wears caregivers down over time.
Identity & Reclaiming Yourself
Finding out who you are beyond the caregiving role — and making space for that person.
The approach
Practical support. Honest conversations. Forward motion.
Therapy with Kenisha is warm, practical, and grounded in your real life. Sessions aren't about dwelling endlessly in what's hard — they're about understanding the patterns keeping you stuck, and building real tools for moving forward.

Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we'll work on the thought patterns driving guilt, anxiety, and overwhelm — and replace them with more realistic, compassionate responses. Solution-Focused therapy helps us identify what's already working and build from there, rather than starting from scratch every week.

Because sessions are virtual, you don't have to carve out extra time for a commute. You can log in from home, your car, or your office — wherever you have 50 minutes and a bit of privacy.
